cars news 10: Italdesign GTZero Concept for Geneva is a Wild EV Shooting Brake

The Italdesign GTZero concept was shown at the 2016 Geneva auto show this week. The Italian design firm says the GTZero project explores the classic sports car model adapted as a sustainable and versatile vehicle for modern times.

The GTZero features a modular monocoque carbon frame with integrated batteries, while forward (and rearward) motivation is provided by three electric motors — one on the rear axle and one on each side of the front axle making it all-wheel drive. Combined power output is rated at 483 hp. The concept also features four-wheel steering. The Italdesign GTZero has a claimed range of about 310 miles and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. A 30-minute charge can juice the battery pack up to 80 percent.

Styling of the GTZero suggests a futuristic shooting brake version of a modern Lamborghini model. Inside, the concept features a reconfigurable seating arrangement including a 2+2 design for two adults and a child or a 3+1 configuration for three adults and one child. The rear cargo area can accommodate three bags, while the frunk has room for two bags. Design of the Italdesign GTZero concept was inspired by some of the company’s past models.

The modular monocoque carbon frame uses aluminum front and rear subframes to mount the suspension, while the body is constructed from lightweight and strong composite materials. The concept rides on 22-inch front and 23-inch rear alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli rubber.

Inside, the GTZero features a minimalist design without any switchgear. Vehicle functions are controlled by a multitouch interface. Two pads mounted on the back of the steering wheel control the three-level OLED dashboard display with four distinct screens. Two more pads on the front of the steering wheel control lights, turn signals, and windshield wipers. The interior is of course wrapped in leather and contrasted with aluminum and carbon trim.
