Genesis New York Concept Bows at New York Auto Show

Hyundai’s newly christened premium brand brought the Genesis New York Concept to the 2016 New York auto show. The new luxury sports sedan is said to preview the brand’s future design direction, which Genesis calls “Athletic Elegance.” The brand says the expressive and refined styling first appeared on the Vision G concept followed by the production Genesis G90 sedan.

Though shown as a future design study, the Genesis New York Concept features a hybrid powertrain based around a 2.0-liter GDI engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although no details about the electric motor or battery pack were revealed, the automaker rates total system output at 242 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. That’s similar power to the automaker’s turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 in the Hyundai Sonata sedan.

Inspiration for the New York Concept comes from modern luxury lifestyles and products as well as the early success and progression of the Genesis brand, according to the automaker. The design is also said to blend cultural heritage with modern art and technology.

When Hyundai spun off its Genesis sedan and coupe and Equus sedan as the basis for its new Genesis premium brand, the automaker confirmed that all future models would be rear-drive based. That fact is evident with the New York Concept’s long dash-to-axle ratio, which is said to add to the car’s sporty nature. The Genesis brand’s design language can be seen in the concept’s upright front grille and chiseled headlights and horizontal body lines.

The chiseled body lines carry over to the side, which features a tapered cabin and pronounced rear haunches. The concept sports a short front overhang and long rear overhang. Around back, slim and wide taillights complement the front lighting. Vents on the hood, front fenders, and quarter panels are said to improve the concept’s aerodynamics. Ceramic Blue paint with contrasting copper-colored inlays in the lower fascia and sills lend a modern feel, according to the automaker.

Inside, the New York Concept’s analog vehicle gauges are complemented by a floating 21-inch curved screen that displays vehicle information and infotainment functions. An open steering wheel design is said to offer improved visibility of the gauges and better ergonomics. Other concept car highlights include a full-length center console and a Central Control Panel (CCP) as well as polished aluminum inlays for a high-quality look. Four individual seats flank the center console.

The concept features a leather-wrapped anthracite interior with contrasting tan leather inserts on the seats and doors with suede leather headrests. In addition to the aluminum inlays, the interior features polished aluminum switch gear and copper-toned, stainless steel mesh.

That aforementioned 21-inch curved screen is supplied by LG and uses the tech company’s Advanced High Performance In-plane Switching technology that is said to offer a wide viewing angle and richer color. The automaker says the concept’s CCP offers an ergonomic and intuitive approach to navigation and infotainment systems. The system also allows for lots of display personalization.
