This weekend during the 2016 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix, a red flag was waved due to a severe accident just short of 20 laps into the 57-lap race. McLaren’s Fernando Alonso was driving behind Haas F1 Team’s Esteban Gutierrez when the two drivers collided, sending Alonso tumbling into a wall.
The accident happened in Turn 3, where Alonso made contact with Gutierrez’s left rear wheel when they entered the braking zone. While the Haas car spun to a stop without sustaining too much damage, the McLaren car barrel-rolled and was launched into the air before coming down and slamming into the tire wall in the gravel trap.
While the accident looks rather severe, Alonso was able to climb out of his wrecked race car and walk away from the scene. The safety car was deployed as both drivers walked off the track. After the race, McLaren tweeted, “Fernando has visited the medical centre and has been formally okayed by the doctors.” His clean bill of health is great news, as just last year, Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi unfortunately died from injuries sustained from an accident during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.
Check out the gnarly crash below and see just how lucky Fernando Alonso was to walk away.
