The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF (retractable fastback) introduced at the 2016 New York auto show features a slick automatic opening targa-style top. Mazda has released a short video showing up close details of the new model, including a look at how the power top works.
While all four generations of the Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster featured a simple manual folding soft top that could be dropped or raised quickly at a stoplight, the Japanese automaker added a power retractable hardtop (PRHT) option to the third-generation model. Although popular for its weather-tight and quieter driving experience, some thought the Mazda MX-5 Miata PRHT looked a bit awkward from the side profile with the top up.
With its new targa-style roof that retains its small quarter windows and flying buttress C-pillars with the roof panel and rear glass lowered, the all-new fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is attractive from any angle regardless of the roof’s position.
The slick new power top operates in a similar fashion to the current Porsche 911 Targa. Check out the video below to see the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF’s folding targa top in action.
