BMW Australia Really Wants a Pickup Truck

In the past, BMW has built a few mini-truck concepts such as the 2011 M3 Pickup shown above. Still, it’s hard to imagine the brand that sold the E30 M3 and the E39 M5 actually adding a pickup truck to its lineup. If BMW Australia gets its way, though, that may actually happen.

Speaking to Australia’s CarAdvice, Marc Werner, head of BMW Australia, made it clear that he thinks BMW needs some sort of answer to the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. “We have been very pushy regarding utes or pickups, and we believe that this is something the company should be looking into,” said Werner. “We have raised that with headquarters and certainly investigations are happening as we speak, but it’s too early to speak about the results of that analysis, but if there was a ute we would certainly take it.”

The way he sees it, if customers want a BMW with a truck bed, the German automaker should offer them one.  “At the end of the day, we need to cater for what the customer and consumer want—and then the question is, does it fit with the BMW DNA and BMW brand promise, or are we over-stretching the brand? That is the core question that needs to be answered,” Werner said.

So is a BMW pickup truck actually happening? “From a pure engineering perspective, everything is possible,” he said. “The question is, what does the brand stand for and how far you want to stretch it?”

Twenty years ago, we would have assumed a BMW pickup truck was too much of a stretch. But after successfully introducing the X5 back in 1999, then turning the X1 into a front-wheel-drive crossover and filling almost every possible niche in the market, BMW’s probably a little more open to trying some different ideas.

Fiat Abarth 124 GT to Debut in Geneva With Carbon-Fiber Hard Top

Carbon Theme McLaren Senna Puts Carbon-Fiber Bodywork on Display

When McLaren first showed off the Senna, its form-follows-function styling shocked its fair share of people. But the McLaren Senna wasn’t built to be pretty. It was built to be “the most exciting street-legal car you can drive on a racetrack.” Not only is every piece of bodywork functional, it’s also made out of carbon fiber. And if you’re really into carbon fiber, McLaren Special Operations will even sell you a Carbon Theme version.

The Carbon Theme, which debuts next week in Geneva, doesn’t exactly turn the Senna into a conventionally attractive supercar, but this version is definitely better looking. With its carbon-fiber bodywork completely exposed, the Senna looks too exotic to be a regular car. And while yellow and green paint can look unnecessarily gaudy, the accents actually work well here. After all, we’re talking about a 789-hp car that McLaren says is “legalized for road use, but not sanitized to suit it.”

To create the new look, McLaren says MSO spends 1,000 hours fabricating the 67 parts of the “Visual Carbon Fibre” exterior. Another 250 hours are then spent adding the accents. The wheels use both forged aluminum and carbon fiber to reduce weight by 10 percent and improve rotational inertia by as much as 15 percent.

As you can imagine, adding a special carbon fiber package to a limited-production supercar is pretty pricey. In this case, the Carbon Theme adds a little more than $400,000 to the Senna’s $1 million price tag. That’s more than the price of a McLaren 720S just to customize your Senna.

On the other hand, look at all that pretty carbon fiber.

BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Teased Ahead of Geneva

Earlier this morning, BMW released a teaser image of what we presume is the upcoming 8 Series Gran Coupe—or at least a concept version of it.

The teaser shows the left side of a four-door with a sloping roof and a narrow but long greenhouse. In January, BMW teased the production 8 Series coupe from behind and in camouflaged test car form. That car featured a similar profile, but the greenhouse opening looked different. The car in this teaser looks like it could easily accommodate a pair of rear doors.

Though most of the car is obscured by shadow, we can see its aggressive front fenders, strong crease by the C-pillar, and large rear spoiler. The design connection to the two-door 8 Series concept BMW unveiled last May can be seen as well, especially the barely-there mirrors and sloping nose.

BMW didn’t release any information with the image, only saying “Stay tuned. More to come in Geneva next week.”

Tuned we shall stay. The 2018 Geneva auto show begins Tuesday, March 6, which means we’ll see this new BMW in less than a week. In the meantime, take a look at the 8 Series coupe concept to get a better idea of what to expect.
