FCA’s iconic SUV brand introduced two new variants for its full-size flagship model at the 2016 New York auto show: the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit trims. The new Trailhawk model offers more off-road capability for the Grand Cherokee, and the Summit brings more luxury to the table.
“With our new Trailhawk and Summit models, Jeep Grand Cherokee becomes even more capable and more luxurious,” said Mike Manley, head of the Jeep brand, in a release.
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk
The Trailhawk name was first used on the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk concept built for the 2012 Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. Later, the off-road-oriented trim made its production debut on the born-again 2014 Jeep Cherokee, and the new 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk followed. The Trailhawk name will now be used on the full-size Jeep Grand Cherokee for the 2017 model year.
“Our Cherokee and Renegade Trailhawk models are among our fastest-selling and most sought-after models, and we are following that successful formula to provide consumers even more legendary Jeep 4×4 capability for Grand Cherokee—the most awarded SUV ever,” Manley said.
Reserved for the most capable variant, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk features lots of standard off-road hardware, including Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system with rear electronic limited-slip differential and a uniquely tuned version of the SUV’s Quadra-Lift air suspension that is said to provide improved articulation and total suspension travel. Off-road electronic bits include Selec-Speed Control with hill ascent control; hard parts include underbody skidplates.
In addition to a max ground clearance of 10.8 inches, Jeep says the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has a standard approach angle of 29.8 degrees and a 36.1-degree approach angle with the lower front fascia removed for off-road driving. The breakover angle is 27.1 degrees, and the departure angle is 22.8 degrees.
Exterior details include the same seven-slot grille and front fascia as the one used on 2016 Grand Cherokee 75th Anniversary edition, Trailhawk signature red tow hooks on both ends, red-accented Trailhawk and Trail Rated badges, Neutral Gray mirror caps and roof rack, and a Trailhawk anti-glare hood decal. A set of Goodyear Adventure off-road tires with Kevlar reinforcement wrap the standard 18-inch or optional 20-inch alloy wheels. Mopar rock rails are also available.
Standard interior features include a unique black interior with leather and suede performance seats, red contrast stitching throughout, Piano black and gunmetal interior trim, and a Trailhawk badge on the steering wheel. The automaker’s 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system is standard and features more vehicle functions, such as updated off-road pages, which now display wheel articulation, suspension height, and four-wheel-drive and Selec-Terrain modes.
Available exterior paint options for the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk include Redline Red, Velvet Red, Bright White, Billet Silver, Rhino, Granite Crystal, and Diamond Black Crystal.
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit
For those who require luxury in their mainstream full-size SUV, FCA offers the new 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. The automaker says the new variant is the most luxurious vehicle in its segment.
“Our new Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is in direct response to consumers who continue to ask for even more luxury, craftsmanship, and standard premium features in a full-size SUV packed with capability,” Manley said.
Exclusive exterior details on the new Summit model include a revised front fascia and grille, LED foglights, and new 20-inch polished alloy wheels. Available paint colors for the Grand Cherokee Summit include Velvet Red, True Blue, Bright White, Ivory Pearl, Granite Crystal, Diamond Black Crystal, Light Brown Stone, and Luxury Brown.
Inside, the Summit features Laguna leather seats with edge welting and Nappa leather-wrapped dashboard, center console, and door panels. That fancy leather interior is available in four colors: Black, Brown, Dark Sienna Brown, and a new Indigo/Ski Gray.
Other luxury touches include a suede headliner, an illuminated door sill, an acoustic windshield and side glass, active noise cancellation, Berber carpet mats, and an 825-watt Harmon Kardon audio system with 19 speakers, including three subwoofers.
The Grand Cherokee Summit also comes with auto-folding power mirrors and headlamp washers, as well as advanced safety tech such as blind-spot detection, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a new lane departure warning system.
Although the new Summit model focuses on luxury, the automaker hasn’t forgotten its off-road heritage and includes Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system with ELSD, the Quadra-Lift air suspension, and Selec-Speed Control.
The new 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit models will hit dealer lots in late summer.
