cars news 10: Volvo V60 Polestar Safety Car Will Pace WTCC Series for 2016 Season

The Volvo V60 Polestar is the new safety car for the opening season of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). Volvo’s hot rod wagon will have a driver and observer and will lead the field ahead of races and will also follow the pack on the opening lap.Unlike the standard V60 Polestar, the safety car is equipped with roll a cage and communication equipment to meet the technical and safety requirements set by the FIA and WTCC’s promoter, Eurosport Events.

“Last October we welcomed Polestar’s long-term commitment to the WTCC as a manufacturer. Now we welcome Polestar as the new Official Safety Car partner of the WTCC, an exclusive opportunity which will allow them to promote their extremely safe and high-performing V60 Polestar flagship model around the world,” said François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events.

Powering the Volvo V60 Polestar is a 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 rated at 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, and the wagon comes standard with all-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmission is the only gearbox available. Development for the V60 Polestar considered input from Polestar Cyan Racing drivers Thed Bjork, Robert Dahlgren, and Fredrik Ekblom. For the 2016 WTCC season, Polestar Cyan Racing will enter two S60 Polestar TC1 race cars, which are based on the Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar road cars.
