Chief of Subaru Parent Company Confirms Second-Gen BRZ, Toyota 86

A new report from Motoring has confirmed that development for the second-generation Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ is well underway, with the cars rumored to arrive in three years. However, don’t expect the twins to come with a significant bump in power, even though Subaru admitted that the most popular request from BRZ owners is to add more grunt.

Fuji Heavy Industries boss Takeshi Tachimori confirmed to Motoring that Subaru and Toyota will continue their collaboration for the second generation of the lightweight rear-drive sports cars. “Yes, we are now discussing about how we can update the Toyota ‘Hachi Roku’ 86 and BRZ model and we are continuing that discussion, what we should do for next-generation BRZ.”

Big power, however, is not in the cards since the focus with the 86 and BRZ is responsiveness, driving purity, and chassis dynamics. “The number one request from our [BRZ] customers is more power. But it’s about the balance of the vehicle. It’s a low center of gravity and good weight balance. Putting a bigger engine upsets the balance,” said Tachimori. “Our idea is try to find the best balance of that type of vehicle and improve drivability. Naturally aspirated is the best for enthusiasts.” Tachimori also said Toyota wanted to keep the 86 and BRZ twins affordable, which makes a more powerful turbocharged engine less likely.

The 2.0-liter flat-four used in the current-generation 86 and BRZ is expected to carry over for the next-generation coupes but is expected to yield more power thanks to advancements in direct-injection technology and likely a higher compression ratio. As part of a mid-cycle refresh, the 2017 Toyota 86 gained 5 hp and 5 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the standard six-speed manual gearbox.
