2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet Debuts in New York

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the final addition to the high-performance C-Class lineup at the 2016 New York auto show, the 2017 C63 and C63 S Cabriolet. Powered by the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 found in its sedan and coupe siblings, the C63 Cabriolet produces 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque while the C63 S bumps that to 503 hp and 516 lb-ft. AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift automatic transmission is the only gearbox available.

Like the sedan and coupe, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 and C63 S Cabriolet come with a host of performance upgrades, including an AMG Ride Control system with adaptive damping that lets you choose between three suspension settings: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes. This works in conjunction with the transmission’s AMG Dynamic Select system, which also offers the same three settings and enables the driver to choose between a more comfortable driving experience and one that’s sportier and more performance-oriented. The Comfort mode also comes with a sailing function that reduces engine speed to neutral if the driver releases the accelerator between 37 and 99 mph to save fuel. A Race mode is exclusive to the C63 S for track day driving.

The C63 S also comes with unique performance features such as dynamic engine mounts that are able to adapt their stiffness to current driving conditions and can improve comfort and/or handling accordingly. Three steering modes, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, also allow the driver to vary the weight of the electric power steering system and works together with the AMG Dynamic Select and AMG Ride Control systems.

Wheel sizes from 18 inches to 20 inches are available on the C63 and C63 S, offered in a staggered layout. Like the C63 Coupe, the C63 Cabriolet comes with a unique rear axle developed specifically for the two-door models and features a wider track compared to the sedan. High-performance 14.2-inch disc brakes are standard on the C63, while the C63 S comes with larger 15.4-inch discs. Lighter carbon ceramic front brakes measuring 15.8 inches in diameter are available as an option.

Compared to the standard C-Class Cabriolet, the C63 and C63 S Cabriolet are 4.5 inches wider up front and 2.6 inches wider at the rear. Both cars also have a hood that’s 2.4 inches longer and features two powerdomes on it. The C-Class Cabriolet also features the AMG “A-wing” front spoiler that doubles as an air deflector for the three cooling air intakes while a front splitter reduces front-axle lift.

Inside, the cabin of the C63 and C63 S feature unique treatments such as contrast topstitching, an analog clock, and aluminum accents. The car also features a touchpad to control the infotainment system, a three-spoke steering wheel with an accent strip marking 12 o’clock, carbon fiber-look gauges, and sport seats. Optional extras include performance seats, a performance exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes, two Carbon Fiber exterior packages, Nappa leather upholstery, carbon fiber/aluminum trim, matte sliver and glass fiber/aluminum trim. A suite of active safety features including Brake Assist and Collision Prevention Assist Plus are also standard or optional on the C63 and C63 S.

Mercedes-AMG also announced the C63 Edition 1, which will be available exclusively in the designo Cashmere White Magno exterior color. The car also includes the Night package, which adds chrome-plated exhaust pipes and a gloss-black lip spoiler, AMG performance seats in saddle brown/black Nappa leather upholstery, contrasting gray topstitching, and a Nappa leather-wrapped, flat-bottom sport steering wheel.
