Protester Interrupts Volkswagen’s Geneva Press Conference (W/Video)

During Volkswagen’s press conference at the 2016 Geneva auto show, a protester dressed up as a Volkswagen mechanic interrupted the automaker’s presentation. The man came on stage saying that he has a new cheat box and that no one will find out about it once he’s installed it on the car. He then proceeds across the stage and lies underneath the Up! city car on the stand and pretends like he’s adding some kind of fix to the car.

Before the protester is escorted off the stage, he goes on to claim that Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Mueller told him that it was OK as long as no one finds out about the cheat devices. The man is then removed from VW’s booth and the program awkwardly continues.

In September 2015, Volkswagen was caught cheating emissions testing with software that allowed cars to emit more than 40 times the allowed amount of pollution. Volkswagen has said that it will offer owners of diesel-powered vehicles a “goodwill” package that includes a $500 prepaid Visa card, a $500 card that can be used at any U.S. Volkswagen dealership, and 24-hour roadside assistance for three years.

Originally, only Volkswagen’s four-cylinder diesel engines were affected but the scandal has now expanded to include V-6-powered diesel vehicles including models from Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen. The automaker has been given until March 24 to disclose a fix for U.S.-spec diesel-powered vehicles.
