Alfa Romeo revealed the rest of the Giulia sedan range at the 2016 Geneva auto show along with two new engine choices. In addition to the high-performance Quadrifoglio variant, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia will be offered in Europe with a new gas or diesel engine that can be paired to a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. In Europe, two other trim levels will be offered below the Quadrifoglio: the base Giulia and the mid-grade Super.
A new 2.0-liter turbo-four that makes 200 hp will be the base gas engine and can be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This will be the entry-level powertrain for the U.S.-spec Giulia, which will be tuned for more power. The new turbocharged four-cylinder includes direct injection and FCA’s Multiair electro-hydraulic valve actuation system. European-spec Giulias will also be available with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel I-4 in 150-hp and 180-hp guises; however, it’s unlikely that this engine will come to the U.S.
As with the range-topping Quadrifoglio models, mainstream Giulia variants will come with near perfect weight distribution. The suspension setup remains double-wishbone up front, with Alfa’s own Alfa Link design in the rear. Additionally, the Giulia is built using lightweight and high-strength materials including carbon fiber and aluminum to maintain a good power-to-weight ratio without sacrificing torsional rigidity.
Inside, the Alfa Romeo Giulia will be available with the 8.8-inch Connected Nav 3D navigation system, which was developed in collaboration with Magnetti Marelli. Controlling the interface can be done with a rotary pad and advanced voice recognition. Depending on the trim level, the Giulia will also come with either a 3.5-inch or 7-inch TFT display in between the gauges that offers the driver information on everything from fuel economy to lateral acceleration and suggested gear changes on manual-equipped cars. A 900-watt Sound Theatre by Harman Kardon premium audio system with 14 speakers is also optional on the Alfa Romeo Giulia. The Giulia comes with a suite of active safety systems that includes automatic forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control (late availability), lane departure warning, and blind spot warning.
