The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S coupe took home our 2015 Best Driver’s Car award. During the previous competition, the 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe R came in ninth place out of 10 cars. Since then, the 2016 Jaguar F-Type Coupe R gained all-wheel drive. On this episode of Head 2 Head, Jonny Lieberman pits the revised cat against the most recent champion to see how it fares.
After a brief exterior design critique, Lieberman takes to the streets. The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 backed by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. The engine is mounted in a front-mid-engine position entirely behind the front axle. Power for the 2016 Jaguar F-Type Coupe R comes from a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 backed by an eight-speed automatic. A new transfer case sends power to all four wheels.
The AMG GT S hits 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and finishes the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 124.2 mph, while the F-Type Coupe R hits 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and finishes the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 121.5 mph.
Next, professional race car driver and Motor Trend hot shoe Randy Pobst laps the two European sports cars around Big Willow at Willow Springs International Raceway to see which one is the better track car.
Check out the video below to see how well the updated all-wheel-drive 2016 Jaguar F-Type Coupe R fares against the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S.
