BBC is in the process of rebooting the fan-favorite “Top Gear,” but one of the new hosts has reportedly already threatened to leave the show before it goes on air. According to sources familiar with the matter, host Chris Evans has been “driven to distraction” over BBC2 controller Kim Shillinglaw’s “micro-management.”
It’s true that Evans may not have the same free reign that ex-host Jeremy Clarkson was given, but as we’ve seen, Clarkson has repeatedly gotten into trouble with his extended freedoms. It would make sense that BBC is taking precautions so that an incident that happened last year doesn’t repeat itself. However, Evans, who wants to make “Top Gear” a quality show, feels “drained and disheartened” after repeated run-ins with the show’s upper management, reports the Mirror.
Evans has allegedly threatened to leave the show thanks to being micro-managed, but executive producer Lisa Clark and script editor Tom Ford have both already called it quits. A source close to the issue says the reason was a familiar one: being constantly questioned by the higher ups.
The show may finally be back on track, with Evans’ morale restored now that Shillinglaw left BBC last week after allegedly being overlooked for a promotion. Filling her role will be former BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore, with whom Evans has a “good professional relationship.”
New episodes of “Top Gear” are said to launch in May. Meanwhile, the former “Top Gear” trio is preparing to launch a new series on Amazon Prime this year.
