Nissan Recalling 846,000 Altima Sedans for Hood Latch Defect

Nissan is recalling about 846,000 Altima sedans for a problem with the secondary hood latch, which might not hold if the hood is accidentally popped at speed, resulting in the part flying up.

The Problem: The secondary hood latch, the one you have to fumble underneath the hood to find after you pop it from inside the car, might not catch when the hood is closed. A plating may not have been applied correctly to the latch assembly at the factory, so paint may not adhere to the part. This could lead to paint flaking off and eventually corrosion, which could cause binding in the secondary latch. If the primary latch lever is accidentally pulled while driving, the hood could fly open, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: The affected vehicles have already been recalled for this issue, but Nissan says the previous fix may not have removed the safety risk. The automaker will re-notify owners, who will receive a new hood latch free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in mid-February. Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall affects 846,000 model-year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima sedans built between March 6, 2012, and December 31, 2014.
