With the continuous advancement of engine technology, cars can now have admirable fuel economy and plenty of power for hauling people or gear. From traditional gas-powered vehicle to hybrids and diesel-powered cars, there are plenty of with plenty of power and 40 mpg or higher on the highway.
2016 Honda Civic: 31/42 mpg city/highway with 1.5-liter turbo-four
Essentially a game changer in the compact class, the 2016 Honda Civic has become the car to beat in its segment and is the first turbocharged vehicle in the Honda lineup. Under the hood, you’ll find a 174-hp 1.5-liter turbo-four with 162 lb-ft of torque mated to a CVT, which allows it to achieve 31/42 mpg city/highway
2016 Mazda 3 S Grand Touring Sedan w/ Technology package: 29/40 mpg city/highway
While the base 2.0-liter I-4 in the Mazda3 is plenty punchy, there’s an optional 184-hp 2.5-liter that’s even better. In the S Grand Touring trim, you can get the Technology package, which comes with brake energy regeneration to up its EPA fuel economy ratings from 28/39 mpg to 29/40 mpg in the sedan.
2016 Audi A3 e-Tron Ultra: 37/41 mpg city/highway; 17 miles on EV mode
Rounding out the Audi A3 range is the A3 e-Tron, a plug-in hybrid hatchback that can do 17 miles on electric power and a totally system output of 204 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the e-Tron Ultra package, the A3 e-Tron gets 16-inch alloy wheels with ultra-low rolling resistance tires, enabling it to achieve an EPA rating of 37/41 mpg.
2016 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec – 28/42 mpg city/highway (27/38 mpg city/highway in E250 4Matic)
For long-distance cruising, nothing beats a comfortable car with a quiet interior, and the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec fits the bill. Powered by a 2.1-liter turbodiesel I-4 that’s rated at 195 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, the E250 is effortless and fuel efficient cruising at its best thanks to an EPA rating of 28/42 mpg on the rear-drive model.
2016 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid – 42/48 mpg city/highway
Currently the only hybrid compact car available, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid offers 42/48 mpg for effortless long-distance driving. Unlike some fuel efficiency-minded cars, the Jetta Hybrid comes with a 1.4-liter turbo-four paired to an electric motor for a combined output of 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. A quick-shifting seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox is the only transmission available.
2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid/PHEV – 40/44 mpg city/highway (SE), 39/43 mpg (Limited), 38/41 (PHEV)
Now available in two flavors, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and PHEV offer up to 40/44 mpg depending on the trim level and type of powertrain chosen. The 2.0-liter I-4 and electric motor produces a combined output of 193 hp in the regular hybrid and 202 hp in the PHEV, giving you plenty of power for climbing up those steep grades and passing slowpokes without sacrificing fuel economy.
2016 Mazda6 Grand Touring w/ Technology package – 28/40 mpg city/highway
In the midsize sedan class, the 2016 Mazda6 is widely considered the driver’s choice thanks to its engaging handling and driving dynamics. When equipped with the Technology package, the car gains brake energy regeneration and active grille shutters, improving its fuel economy rating from 27/38 mpg to 28/40 mpg, which also makes it the leader in frugality among four-cylinder midsize sedans.
2016 BMW 328d – 32/42 mpg city/highway (30/40 mpg for 328d xDrive and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon)
The BMW 3 Series is essentially the class benchmark among compact luxury sports sedans thanks to its excellent blend of power, agility, and ride comfort. Should you need plenty of range to go with well-balanced driving dynamics, the diesel-powered 328d is the perfect solution getting up to 42 mpg on the highway. All that fuel efficiency doesn’t come at the cost of power since the 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 makes a generous 180 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.
2016 Kia Optima Hybrid – 36/40 mpg city/highway (35/39 mpg in EX trim)
Kia’s first hybrid vehicle, the Optima Hybrid, offers plenty of style and great fuel economy. The Optima car remains competitive and doesn’t sacrifice power in the name of fuel economy, with 199 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. Look for a new Optima Hybrid and a Plug-In Hybrid to debut sometime in 2016.
2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid – 44/41 mpg city/highway
Among midsize sedans, the Ford Fusion is one of few that comes with an engaging driving experience, and the hybrid adds excellent fuel economy to the mix. Equipped with a 2.0-liter I-4 paired to an electric motor for a total output of 188 hp, the Fusion Hybrid gives you plenty of power to haul your family and make quick getaways without sacrificing fuel economy.
Honorable Mention: 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid
Created by leveraging the Chevrolet Volt PHEV’s powertrain technology, the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid promises to be one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class and is expected to achieve an EPA rating of 48/45 mpg city/highway. Under the hood, the electric motor and the 1.8-liter I-4 produce a total output of 182 hp, giving you plenty of get up and go for passing, merging, and climbing up steep hills.
