Early last year, we caught what we thought was the Ford Fiesta RS testing with two Focus RS models. However, it looks like the rumors of a Fiesta RS were just rumors. During the launch of the Ford Focus RS, Ford Performance chief engineer and head of vehicles Tyrone Johnson spoke with CarAdvice, confirming that the Fiesta RS will not be produced.
Before spy shots of the supposed Ford Fiesta RS surfaced, Ford announced that it would add 12 performance models by 2020. Johnson sparked the rumor mill when he told Autocar that the Fiesta RS is possible “if there’s a business case and if it’s technically feasible.”
Now, Johnson has backtracked, telling CarAdvice that “In terms of Fiesta RS, I have seen some comments from senior Ford people that it’s definitely not in the plan. Typically we don’t talk about future products but in that particular one there has been some comments that it’s definitely not in the plan.”
Like the Focus RS, the Fiesta RS would be the top Fiesta model, sitting above the current Fiesta ST, with a price close to the Focus ST. Now that it has been confirmed that a Fiesta RS isn’t in the works, Ford still has seven Ford Performance models to produce before its self-imposed 2020 deadline. Of the 12 proposed performance models, Ford has only introduced the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Focus RS, Mustang GT350 R, and the GT supercar.
