Nearly 400,000 Ford Rangers Recalled Following 10th Takata Death

Ford is expanding its recall of vehicles equipped with Takata airbag inflators after a 10th death related to the defective parts was announced last Friday. The automaker is recalling a total of 391,394 model-year 2004-2006 Ford Ranger pickups in North America.

Ford says it’s aware of the death, which occurred last year in a Ford Ranger after the airbag deployed and lodged shrapnel into the driver’s neck. Federal safety regulators announced that an additional 5 million vehicles should be recalled following the death, which is the first to occur in a vehicle other than a Honda. The announcement ropes Audi, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz into the Takata fiasco.

All of the Ford Ranger pickups in this recall have already been recalled for passenger airbags, but the new campaign addresses driver side airbag inflators. Of the total number, 361,692 pickups are in the United States, while 29,334 units are in Canada. All vehicles were assembled in North America.

Owners affected by this recall will be instructed to bring their truck in to a dealer, where the airbag inflator will be replaced free of charge.
