Go Behind the Scenes of the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty Frame Stunt

A video has been released showing how the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty frame stunt was accomplished. The original video, which shows the F-Series Super Duty’s frame supporting the weight of nine Ford trucks, was released last fall during the pickup’s reveal.

In the original video, Ford used a giant construction crane to lift the all-new 2017 F-Series Super Duty pickup’s frame with eight 2015 Ford F-150 pickups and the Ford F-750 Tonka dump truck concept. With each F-150 weighing around 4,700 pounds along with the F-750 Tonka truck’s 13,660 pounds and 8,840 pounds of rigging, the 2017 F-Series Super Duty frame was able to support 60,300 pounds without any visual bending or stress.

So how was Ford able to pull off the stunt?

The second video shows the behind-the-scenes action. Ford hung a spreader bar above the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty frame to evenly distribute the load. The cables attaching the pickup frame to the spreader bar are attached where the axles would be mounted. The eight F-150 pickups and the F-750 Tonka Truck are hung below with cables attached to brackets just outside the axles. Ford says this focuses the weight on a highly stressed area of the 2017 Super Duty frame. Upon inspection, the frame was free of cracks or bends, according to the automaker.
