TVR’s Next Sports Car to be Constructed Mostly of Carbon Fiber

Back in 2014, TVR was sold to a British investor group led by Les Edgar, Aston Martin racer and computer games millionaire, with the hopes that the automaker would produce a new model within the following two to three years. Now, TVR says that its upcoming model will be constructed entirely out of carbon fiber.

The limited-edition launch model would be the automaker’s first-ever full production carbon fiber sports car, and will keep TVR’s lightweight and high-performance principles. Gordon Murray, who’s best known for his work in Formula 1 and for designing  the McLaren F1, has developed a ground effects aero chassis and body package using his iStream Carbon manufacturing process, which allows for the production of a standalone tub and shell made from a carbon fiber composite at a significantly reduced cost.

“Historically, carbon fiber has been reserved for motorsport and high-end supercars, but now TVR will be offering customers a slice of that technology at a fraction of the price. The spotlight has been on us from the start, and with the help of Gordon Murray Design and its innovative processes, we have made sure that our new sports car can really shine and deliver beyond expectations,” said Les Edgar, Chairman of TVR, in a release.

All models of the Launch Edition will be made with the carbon fiber process, while subsequent models will offer the carbon fiber package as an option. Both the carbon fiber and standard composite construction models will be produced using the iStream method to reduce cost and increase safety. TVR sent out an update on the new process, informing customers who have already given a deposit about the “no-cost” carbon fiber chassis option.
