cars news 10: Spied! Is This the Upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT R?

Mercedes-Benz is following up on its Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car winner with a more focused, high-performance model. Shown in the following spy photos is Benz’s rumored Mercedes-AMG GT R, a new variant that will sit above the Mercedes-AMG GT S.

Speculation suggests the AMG GT R will essentially be a road-going version of the AMG GT GT3 race car. The photos do reveal a number of GT3-like treatments, including its aggressive rear diffuser, large fixed rear wing, larger wheels, and a lower stance.

It’s unclear how much of the GT3 race car will trickle down to the road-going GT R. The big question is if the GT R will get the GT3’s 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated V-8 or the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 current found in the AMG GT lineup. Whatever AMG decides to stuff under the hood, it’ll undoubtedly produce more than the 503 horses from the Mercedes-AMG GT S.

Benz will likely follow up the GT R with at least one more variant — the AMG GT Black Series. As with past Black Series models, the GT version will likely come toward the end of its life cycle and will receive a host of aero and suspension modifications. Last spring an AMG GT prototype, rumored to be the Black Series variant, was caught lapping the Nürburgring in Germany.
