Refreshing or Revolting: 2017 Infiniti Q60

The all-new 2017 Infiniti Q60 comes two years after the Q50 sedan, and keeps much of the same design themes that were seen on the Q60 concept shown in Detroit last year. The Q60 grows slightly when compared to the outgoing model, but offers the same 112.2-inch wheelbase. Thanks to smaller gaps between the wheel arches and tires, the car’s stance looks more aggressive. With new engines and a sharp new design, does the all-new Q60 capture the essence of the G37 coupe it replaces?

At the front, Infiniti has redesigned the grille, featuring a larger, honeycomb design in place of the slatted grille on the outgoing model. The headlights have a sleek triangular shape, and the foglights now flow with the lines of the front fascia instead of bulging out under the headlights. The profile has been updated to show off a more sloped roofline that flows into the rear of the vehicle. The rear quarter window features a more pointed design, while the character line running from the hood to the trunk just under the side mirror is more sculpted. The air vent behind the front wheels gives the 2017 Infiniti Q60 a more aggressive and sporty appearance compared to the outgoing model.

The rear features the same sharp angles found in the front fascia, with updated taillights that feature nearly the same design as the headlights, and now flow horizontally through the trunklid, instead of wrapping around the base of the trunk. The chrome bar along the small rear spoiler is gone in favor of a body-color spoiler. The rear bumper now encases the dual exhaust, instead of them resting just underneath. The rear window looks to be slightly smaller than the one on the outgoing model.

Get behind the wheel, and the new 2017 Infiniti Q60 has just as many changes inside as out. The steering wheel has been redesigned, with the center slimming down to accommodate a few more mounted controls and a chrome accent. The infotainment system features a stacked dual screen, with controls lining the sides of the bottom screen. In front of the center console, Infiniti has added two cup holders, and sectioned off the shift knob and its controls. The chrome and metallic accents have been toned down in favor of more soft-touch materials for a sleek, modern look.

Infiniti held as close to the concept that bowed in Detroit as it could have, and the design details that have stayed help to elevate the 2017 Q60 coupe. The G37 coupe, which this model replaces, left big shoes to fill, but is this overhaul enough to recapture what made the G37 so unique?

Last week’s Refreshing or Revolting featured the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and many seem to be liking the new look, while others find the new look isn’t separated enough from the rest of the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

“I feel like we’ve seen this before. Probably because we have on every other Mercedes model,” said RCD.

“Definitely refreshing. This new E-class is gorgeous. But the interior is the most impressive, I’m blown away with how beautiful and upscale the interior looks,” said Korpa283.

“I like it overall, but between the three core Mercedes sedans, I think both the S and the C look better than this new E. to me it looks heavy and bulbous in the front, and pinched too much in the rear. Something is not in balance,” said bodromarsh.

“Refreshing—due to the interior, which looks to set a new standard for the class. I find the exterior way too similar to the C and S class. Not revolting, just derivative,” said CarNut2014.
