Audi Electric SUV to Be Built in Belgium

Audi will begin production on its first all-electric SUV in Brussels, Belgium in 2018. The Audi E-tron Quattro concept shown during last year’s Frankfurt motor show “provides a clear indication” of the final production model, the automaker also said.

As we’ve known for some time, the final model will slot between the Q5 and Q7 and should offer at least 310 miles of range. It’s likely that the model will bear the Q6 name. The Audi electric SUV will come equipped with three electric motors, and its battery will be produced on-site at the Brussels plant.

The model is expected to resemble the Audi E-tron Quattro concept, which sports a coupe-like silhouette. It also offers aerodynamic features—including wheel spoilers and a sliding rear spoiler and rear diffuser—that help achieve the long range. The all-wheel-drive concept sits on Volkswagen’s second-generation MLB platform that accommodates many different drivetrains. The automaker also debuted an H-Tron Quattro concept at the Detroit auto show as a follow-up to the E-Tron concept.

Along with the announcement that Audi will build its electric SUV exclusively in Belgium, the automaker also announced a number of other changes in its production schedule. Production of the baby A1 will move from Brussels to Martorell, Spain in the future. Meanwhile, Audi will switch production of the Q3 from Spain to Gyor, Hungary. This site already produces the A3 sedan, A3 convertible, TT, and TT Roadster models.
