Earlier today, McLaren Automotive announced its “Track22” business plan, outlining the next six years for the company. The automaker will not only develop 15 all-new cars or derivatives of current models, it will also offer at least 50 percent of its lineup with hybrid technology by 2022.
Research and development will be a major focus for McLaren, as the automaker will invest nearly $1.4 billion to develop two-seater sports cars and supercars, which will help fund the launch of new models. McLaren will also create a track-focused sub-brand, “LT,” following the success of the 675LT Coupe and Spider models.
“Since its inception, McLaren Automotive has launched world-class products and this has been made possible by continuous investment in our future. The launch of our new six-year Business Plan, named Track22 because I believe that we are on track to a very exciting and successful future, scopes our future investments and development strategy up until 2022. This will see us launch 15 all-new cars or derivatives within our existing Sports Series, Super Series, and Ultimate Series families. We will also develop an all-new engine architecture that will debut towards the end of the business plan,” said Mike Flewitt, McLaren Automotive’s CEO, in a release.
Also outlined in the new business plan is McLaren’s intention of offering at least 50 percent of its models with hybrid technology. Early prototypes of fully-electric powertrains are currently under evaluation for an upcoming Ultimate Series vehicle. This development comes in part from the success of the McLaren P1, the gas-electric hybrid hypercar that’s among the quickest accelerating cars Motor Trend has ever tested.
