GM’s New 10-Speed Automatic to Spread to Eight More Models by 2018

Although GM chose the new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to debut its new 10-speed automatic transmission, the gearbox will spread throughout the automaker’s lineup. The new 10-speed auto will be used in eight models by 2018, according to Mark Reuss, GM global product chief.

Reuss didn’t specify which models would receive the new 10-speed automatic. The transmission, which was co-developed with Ford for longitudinally-mounted rear-drive applications, could be used on other Camaro models as well as in the Cadillac ATS sedan and coupe and CTS sedan, which share the Camaro’s Alpha platform. Other possibilities include full-size SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, or full-size pickups including the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

Despite the new 10-speed auto spreading to other models, GM’s in-house-designed eight-speed automatic won’t disappear. That transmission is currently used in Cadillac sedans, the Camaro, GM’s SUVs and full-size pickups, and the Corvette.

Ford will debut the new jointly-developed 10-speed automatic in the all-new 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor, which goes on sale this fall about the same time as the new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
