Mercedes-Benz has started teasing the GLC Coupe in a new video ahead of its official debut at the 2016 New York auto show. Essentially the production version of the Concept GLC Coupe that debuted at the 2015 Shanghai auto show, the GLC Coupe is aimed squarely at the BMW X4 and will slot below the larger GLE Coupe.
The 25-second video shows a lightly camouflaged GLC Coupe prototype being driven enthusiastically on a closed course, power sliding and doing high-speed runs on wet pavement. Even with the car partially covered, it’s clear that the GLC Coupe will essentially look like a shrunken-down GLE Coupe and feature the same low, coupe-like roofline to make it look more distinctive — and more polarizing — than the standard GLC on which it’s based. From the way the engine sounds, the particular prototype seen in the teaser might be powered by the 362-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 that will also be utilized in the GLC43 crossover.
In addition to the twin-turbo V-6, look for a 241-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four as the base engine in the GLC Coupe and a nine-speed automatic transmission as the only gearbox available. Expect a full-fledged AMG variant powered by a hand-built twin-turbo V-8 to round out the GLC-Class lineup.
Earlier this week, we spied two lightly camouflaged GLC Coupe prototypes winter testing. Look for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe to go on sale late this year or sometime in early 2017.
