Pagani Debuts Lighter, More Powerful Huayra BC in Geneva

The Pagani Huayra BC made its debut at the 2016 Geneva auto show, and the car is not only more powerful, but it weighs less, too. Named after Benny Caiola, Horacio Pagani’s first customer and close friend, the Huayra BC promises to take things up a notch from the original Huayra coupe. Inspired by its predecessors, the Zonda R and Zonda Cinque, the Huayra BC is billed as a road-going hypercar that can provide exceptional performance on the track.

Underpinned by a Pagani-built monocoque made of titanium and carbon fiber, the Huayra BC promises to be the lightest hypercar available. The engine remains a Mercedes-AMG-sourced twin-turbo V-12 developed specifically for Pagani, but the unit in the BC has been massaged to make over 740 hp. A sport exhaust with a low-back-pressure muffler is also new, delivers a more unique sound, and weighs less than the system used in the Huayra coupe.

The transmission is a new seven-speed automated manual unit built by Xtrac that features an electro-hydraulic actuation system and carbon fiber synchronizers that were designed to increase the precision of gear engagement and quicken shift times. Clutch control programming for the new gearbox has also been revised for greater accuracy. There’s also a new electronic active differential that can adapt to a full range of driving conditions from track driving to low-grip situations. In total, the new automated manual gearbox and electronic differential is 40 percent lighter than comparable dual-clutch transmissions today.

Pagani says the Huayra BC’s suspension setup is the “lightest and most effective ever applied to a road-going high-performance vehicle.” The components are made of HiForg, a lightweight aeronautic aluminum alloy, which made the Huayra BC’s suspension 25 percent lighter compared to the Huayra coupe. Additionally, Pagani redesigned the majority of the Huayra BC’s suspension components for improved responsiveness, driving dynamics, and rigidity. Brakes, on the other hand, are supplied by Brembo, and are carbon ceramic units designed specifically for high-performance driving. The brake system is lighter than that used in the standard Huayra.

The hypercar uses Pirelli P Zero Corsa high-performance tires with an asymmetrical tread pattern that come wrapped around 20-inch wheels up front and 21-inch wheels in the rear. For track driving, Pagani also offers smaller-diameter 19-inch wheels in the front and 20-inch wheels in the back wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R high-performance tires that — according to the automaker — will allow the Huayra BC to achieve a lateral acceleration of up to 2 g. A new ESP system from Bosch has been calibrated specifically for the Huayra BC and gains a Track mode, in addition to the Comfort and Sport modes.

Aerodynamics was one of the key areas of focus when the original Pagani Huayra coupe was designed, and in the Huayra BC, the automaker continued to work on making its hypercar cheat the wind. As a result, the original Huayra coupe and the Huayra BC don’t share a single body panel since everything but the roof has been redesigned on the new car. Air entering the air ducts do so at higher speeds to ensure better cooling for the mechanical components and improving the Huayra BC’s aerodynamics. Inside, the cabin of the Huayra BC is minimalist and highlights the automaker’s emphasis on weight savings.
