Old-school bespoke automaker Morgan brought an eco-friendly vehicle to the 2016 Geneva auto show this week. The Morgan EV3 is a zero-emissions, rear-drive, three-wheel vehicle with clear lineage from the automaker’s V-twin-powered 3 Wheeler.
Powered by a 46-kW (62-hp) electric motor, the 1,200-pound Morgan EV3 can accelerate to 62 mph in less than 9.0 seconds, according to the automaker. Top speed is claimed to be more than 90 mph. Juice for the liquid-cooled motor is supplied by a 20-kWh lithium battery integrated into the tubular space frame chassis. Morgan claims a 150-mile range for the EV3.
The Phase 1 EV3 was first shown in 2015, and the British automaker says the new concept is in the final “pre-production phase” and debuts the exterior and interior styling. The Morgan EV3 features carbon fiber body panels including the hood, tonneau covers, and side pods. Like the other aluminum body panels, the composite bits are hand-fitted over an ash wood frame.
The styling is said to be inspired by classic motorcycles, 1930s-era aeroengine race cars, and 1950s-era fantasy vehicles. Brass conductive cooling fins for the batteries and an off-center third headlight in the grille dominate the front end styling. Inspired by Morgan 3 Wheeler race cars from the 1930s, the Morgan EV3 features a tapered tail lift with low-mounted running lights in the rear.
Inside, a new dashboard design features a classic magneto switch for the drive selector as well as a digital screen. The interior features wood, brass, and polished aluminum trim.
Production of the Morgan EV3 will begin in the fourth quarter of this year with pricing said to be close to that of the gas-powered 3 Wheeler. Check out the video below to see the electric three-wheeler in action.
