Our spy photographers have caught a 2018 Ford Focus mule performing cold weather testing. This mule may look like your average Focus at first glance, but upon closer inspection you’ll notice a few differences, hinting that there are extensive changes coming to the next-generation model scheduled to arrive for the 2018 model year.
This particular test mule has all kinds of body modifications to accommodate new running gear and suggests that the next generation of the Focus will be wider and longer than the car it will replace. On the hood, there is a seam running through it, while the front and rear bumpers have modifications on them that point to the car being longer. There are also unfilled gaps between the roof and the doors, which points at the car being slightly wider. Additionally, the test mule’s rear wheels are pushed toward the back and they aren’t centered within the wheel well, suggesting a longer wheelbase than the current car.
Not much is known regarding what will power the 2018 Ford Focus, but we can likeky expect it to come with an array of EcoBoost engines including the 1.0-liter turbo-three for a fuel economy-focused model, the 2.0-liter turbo-four for the Focus ST, and the 2.3-liter turbo-four in the Focus RS. In the U.S., hatchback and sedan body styles should remain while other world markets will likely get a wagon variant of Ford’s fun-to-drive compact car.
