For the first time in 30 years, a team from the U.S. will enter a car in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. That car will be the Haas VF-16 race car, which broke cover today via social media.
As the very first race car for the Haas F1 team, the VF-16 features a dark gray, light gray, and red-toned livery. Under the bodywork, the model packs an engine from Ferrari. The VF-16 takes its name from the VF-1, the first CNC machine manufactured by Haas Automation back in 1988.
The VF-16 hits the track today for its first day of preseason testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. On March 20, the VF-16 will make its racing debut at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Hopefully, the debut will help erase memories of a failed attempt by the US F1 team, which withdrew from the 2010 season and dashed hopes for an American comeback in F1 racing.
The California-based company Haas Automation says it sells over $1 billion in annual sales as the largest machine tool builder in North America. Company and team founder Gene Haas already has his hands in NASCAR with Stewart-Haas Racing and previously competed in open-wheel racing with Newman/Haas in IndyCar.
