2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Gets eAssist Mild Hybrid Model

GM has revealed yet another variant of the GMC Sierra pickup — this time it is more than just an appearance package. The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with eAssist technology is said to achieve up to 13 percent greater fuel economy than the half-ton pickup with the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 engine.

Available solely on the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT crew cab 2WD model with the SLT Premium Plus package, the eAssist technology yields an EPA-estimated 18/24/20 mpg city/highway/combined rating. That’s 2 mpg higher across the board compared to the standard 5.3-liter engine without the eAssist system.

“Innovative technology that enhances capability is at the core of everything we do at GMC and the new Sierra with eAssist takes it to a higher level,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing, in a release. “Its advantages are delivered in a compromise-free package that enables real-world fuel savings with premium content that provides a very high level of refinement, comfort and connectivity.”

The increased fuel economy is made possible via a compact induction motor that is mounted to the 5.3-liter engine’s accessory drive. With software controls derived from the Chevrolet Volt PHEV, the motor provides 15 kW of peak regenerative capability for up to 13 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque under certain conditions. Additional hardware includes a liquid-cooled power inverter module (mounted under the hood) and a 24-cell, air-cooled 0.45-kWh lithium-ion battery pack (mounted under the center console or front bench seat). GM claims the system only adds 100 pounds additional weight to the pickup.

Despite the additional power boost, the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with eAssist technology has the same 355 hp and 383 lb-ft peak power ratings as the standard 5.3-liter powerplant. We imagine the electric motor makes more power under the curve. Like the standard engine, the eAssist variant is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. With the standard Eaton locking rear differential, the Sierra 1500 with eAssist technology has a max trailering rating of 9,400 pounds.

Exclusive technology with the eAssist system includes Stop/Start capability when stopped in traffic, electric power boost while in four-cylinder mode during acceleration and passing maneuvers, and a regenerative braking system to recharge the battery pack. Aerodynamic improvements include a standard soft tonneau cover and automatic grille shutters that close at speeds above 30 mph.

The SLT Premium Plus package includes LED exterior lighting (IntelliBeam headlights, foglights, and taillights), IntelliLink 8.0-inch- color touchscreen navigation system with Bose audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android, and wireless phone charging. Active safety tech includes Lane Keep Assist and Forward Collision Alert, Front and Rear Park Assist, and rearview camera. Other features include heated and vented leather seats and heated steering wheel.

GM will initially offer 200 examples of the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with eAssist technology in California with potential for more units based on market demand.
