cars news 10: Volkswagen Previews Small Crossover Concept Ahead of Geneva

In new teaser images, Volkswagen previews a small crossover concept bound for the Geneva auto show. Based on what we previously heard about VW’s plans in Geneva, the model will likely be called the T-Cross concept.

The concept represents “the beginning of a broad SUV offensive” for VW. As evident from its high roofline and prominent wheel arches, it’s definitely a small crossover. The model will feature very few switches inside the cabin, taking after the BUDD-e concept shown at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

VW hints that a production version will eventually make its way to market. “With this, Volkswagen gives a realistic perspective on a completely new model series and at the same time on the future production model,” the automaker said in a recent press release.

Indeed, we heard rumors that the small crossover is based on the VW Polo and will go into production in 2018. Like the Polo and Golf, it will sit on the flexible MQB platform which supports gas, diesel, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. The T-Cross will likely rival the likes of the Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, and Nissan Juke.

VW is also using the Geneva auto show to debut a new version of its up! city car. This model will come available with gas, natural gas, and electric powertrains. VW will offer a higher-riding cross up! version and two-seater load up! as part of the lineup, as well as new exterior colors, smartphone integration through the Volkswagen app, and an “up! beats” sound system created by BeatsAudio.
