Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard Meets VR10 Ballistic Standard

For those needing the highest level of protection outside of their compound, Mercedes-Maybach offers an armored version of its full-size premium sedan. The new Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard meets the standards for VR10 ballistic and blast protection — the highest level available for civilian vehicles.

The upgrades to the S600 Guard meet the criteria for the VR10 protection rating according to Directive BRV 2009 Version 2 (Bullet Resistant Vehicles). Additionally, the S600 Guard meets the ERV 2010 rating (Explosive Resistant Vehicles). While test criteria are not public knowledge, the vehicles was approved upon inspection by Germany’s Federal Office of Criminal Investigation.

In order to meet the specification, the vehicle’s bodywork and windows must be able to withstand the blast from hardened steel core bullets of an assault rifle. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard is also designed to remain mobile during and after an attack, according to the automaker.

Upgrades to the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard include reinforcement of the unit-body, including additional steel between the chassis and body panels and overlapping material at critical points and fixed windows made from unique materials including lamination and polycarbonate coatings. The vehicle also features underbody armoring to protect against explosions below the vehicle.

Other Mercedes models available with armor protection include S-Class, G-Class, and GLE models. Pricing for the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard starts at €470,000 plus VAT or about $518,000.
