Production of the all-new 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has begun at the automaker’s Sindelfingen plant in Germany, with the first model rolling off the line earlier today. While Europe may see deliveries in the coming weeks, customers in the U.S. will have to wait until this summer.
To celebrate the official start of production, Mercedes-Benz gathered the last nine generations of the E-Class sedan at the Sindelfingen plant. “The start of series production in our 101st year continues the Sindelfingen success story,” said Michael Bauer, site manager of the Sindelfingen facility. “The E-Class stands for everything that makes our plant the competence center for upper range and luxury-class vehicles: tradition, innovation and the drive to set standards among the world’s best.”
The 10th-gen E-Class features an optional Driver Assistance package that makes it the most intelligent vehicle in its class, at least according to Mercedes-Benz. The package includes the Drive Pilot system, which is the automaker’s next step to autonomous driving. It features Distance Pilot Distronic, which automatically keeps the proper distance from vehicles in front and can follow at speeds up to 130 mph. Steering Pilot offers steering assistance, even in tight turns.
Sindelfingen is Daimler AG’s oldest vehicle plant that employs over 25,000 workers. It builds the E-Class, CLS, S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach vehicles, and the Mercedes-AMG GT. Markus Schäfer, production chief for Mercedes-Benz, said during the celebrations, “In front of us stands the world’s most intelligent business saloon, but by the world’s best employees. Intelligent, innovative, packed with high tech—and premium quality. We are confident that our customers around the world are going to be impressed.”
