Report: Mazda Might Not Attend Paris Auto Show

Mazda may elect not to attend the Paris auto show this October, according to a report from Automotive News Europe. And if it does skip out, it won’t be the only automaker to do so.

Mazda Europe CEO Jeff Guyton said that discussions were still underway regarding the automaker’s role in the show. While he admits that Paris is a “huge” show, it can be hard to stand out there against French automakers including Renault and PSA/Peugeot Citroen.

Ford will also skip the Paris auto show this year to focus on tech events like the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Volvo also won’t make it to Paris and has gone so far as to limit itself to one auto show per region. The automaker wants to put a greater focus on direct-to-consumer marketing.

Skipping out on auto shows is becoming a trend, and not just in Europe. A number of automakers dropped out of Detroit this year, including Mini, Tesla, and Jaguar.

While it’s still unclear whether Mazda will exhibit in Paris, we’ll definitely see Mazda in Geneva for the debut of the Mazda3 with a 1.5-liter diesel engine. The RX-Vision sports car, which originally debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show, will also make its way to Geneva.

We reached out to Mazda for comment, but have yet to hear back.
