Mainstream Alfa Romeo Giulia Variants to Debut in Geneva

Alfa Romeo is scheduled to show new versions of its Giulia sedan at the 2016 Geneva auto show, according to a report from Automotive News Europe. The new variants follow the 505-hp Giulia Quadrifoglio, which was revealed last year and made its North American debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The base version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia is expected to receive a 2.0-liter turbo-four with direct injection and FCA’s Multiair variable valve timing system. It will come available in three states of tune: 180 hp, 250 hp, and 330 hp. U.S.-spec Giulias are likely only getting the 250 hp and 330 hp versions of the new engine, however. A 2.2-liter turbodiesel is expected for European markets in 135 hp, 180 hp, and 210 hp variants, and it’s likely not coming to the U.S.

Launching the Giulia has not been without issue because the car has already been delayed for six months. As we reported earlier, the cause of the delay was due to the car not passing internal front, rear, and side crash tests. Former Ferrari chief engineer Roberto Fedeli has also returned as Alfa Romeo and Maserati’s tech chief to help fix ongoing technical issues at both brands, according to suppliers.

Production for the Giulia Quadrifoglio and diesel-powered variants is now planned for March 31 with deliveries set to start in Italy by late May or early July. In the U.S., the Quadrifoglio will go on sale in the third quarter. Giulias powered by the 2.0-liter turbo-four, on the other hand, are scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. by the end of 2016. Following the Giulia sedan will be the Stelvio, Alfa Romeo’s first crossover.

FCA has declined to comment about the delays on the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
