Groupe Renault today unveiled the Alpine Vision concept car, an evolution of the Celebration concept that debuted last year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Like that concept, the Alpine Vision sports styling cues that bear a strong resemblance to the classic Renault-Alpine A110 Berlinette.
The concept is yet another step in Groupe Renault’s launch of its Alpine brand. According to the automaker, the Alpine Vision concept previews a production car, which is scheduled to be revealed by the end of this year.
Compared to previous concepts like the Alpine-Renault A110-50, the Alpine Vision concept’s design is an obvious homage to the classic A110. The front end, for example, features fog lamps flanked between the main headlights, mimicking the A110. Additionally, the hammerhead-style hood treatment and the Alpine logo are yet more styling throwbacks to the classic Alpine.
The concept’s roofline isn’t as dramatically sloped as the A110’s, though the door and fender line treatment strongly resemble that of the classic French sports car.
The automaker says the concept is powered by a turbocharged inline-four with enough grunt to propel the coupe from 0-62 mph in less than 4.5 seconds. Unlike the rear-engined A110, the Alpine Vision’s engine is mid-mounted, taking direct aim at the Porsche Cayman and Alfa-Romeo 4C. The automaker says a focus on lightweight construction will ensure the new Alpine will be nimble and athletic on the road.
Following the production car’s debut later this year, the automaker says its new sports car will roll into showrooms by early 2017. Should it come with an attractive price tag, the Alpine could be a fierce competitor to the Cayman and 4C.
