Late last year, we caught BMW testing prototypes of the next-generation 2017 5 Series in the Mojave Desert with a more subtle appearance than the outgoing model. Now, we’ve spied the 5 Series sedan with the M Sport package testing in full camouflage.
The most notable feature of the new prototype is perhaps a bigger and more aggressive front bumper. While the majority of the photos below show off the 2017 BMW 5 Series with the M Sport package, we also caught the standard 5 Series, and it’s relatively easy to see the differences between the two models. The front of the standard model shows a more subdued lower grille. Once the camo comes off, however, that may change.
This time around, we managed to get a glimpse inside the cockpit, and we noticed some slight changes from the 2016 model. While most of the interior is covered up, the infotainment screen and instrument cluster are completely on display. The screen itself looks to be slightly larger than the outgoing model, but the way it sits on top of the dash hasn’t changed. The instrument cluster looks to offer a slight redesign, especially with the smaller, outer gauges, but the glare in the photo makes it difficult to make out.
We still expect the standard 2017 BMW 5 Series to be powered by a base turbo-four, with the option for a revised turbo-six to make more power than the current model’s 300 hp.
