Cheap Luxury: 10 Premium Sedans Under $40,000

The best full-size luxury sedans have the kind of presence other vehicles simply can’t match. Think Rolls-Royce Phantom. But because most of us don’t have the money for a new or even used Phantom, what should a cash-strapped buyers looking to make an impression do? That’s where full-size and larger midsize sedans under $40,000 come in: they offer some style and decently sized interiors without breaking the bank. Check out our list below, and tell us what large sedan under $40,000 with a bit of style you’d drive.

Lincoln MKZ

The 2017 Lincoln MKZ’s sleek exterior borrows design cues from the forthcoming Continental large sedan, but for a starting price of $35,935. Still under our $40,000 price cap, the MKZ will throw in an approach detection system that illuminates the ground outside of the door with puddle lamps as you walk up. Talk about a warm welcome. You also get a striking interior that’s distinctive for the segment (how many other cars have push buttons for a gear shifter?), so you can make a positive impression without breaking the bank.

Hyundai Genesis

The full-size Genesis is about to be renamed, as Hyundai breaks out the Genesis name as its own separate luxury brand. For now, you can get into a rear-drive Genesis with a V-6 engine for $39,700. If you want all of the trick active safety features you’ll be well past our $40,000 budget, but the base car offers plenty of value for a true full-sizer.

Lexus ES 350

The Lexus ES has a secret: with 40 inches of rear legroom the ES 350 is roomier than the flagship Lexus LS. The less-expensive Lexus comes standard with convincing fake leather called NuLuxe. For $38,950 you get a luxury brand badge and plenty of interior room.

Kia Cadenza

Kia offers some of the best deals in the segments in which it competes, and that includes the full-size, front-drive Kia Cadenza. The outgoing model starts at $33,840, and for $3,000 more, the Premium trim Cadenza adds a panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors, and more. The upcoming 2017 Cadenza looks to inch even closer to the flagship K900 sedan, with improved appointments on the inside, and upgraded handling.

You can get into this icon of affordable full-size style for $33,010 with the V-6 engine. Springing for the V-8 gets you to $39,465, and if you’re looking for a little more growl from your not-quite-a-Rolls-Royce ride, the 363-hp, 394-lb-ft powerplant is worth it.  At this price, few sedans have the curb appeal of the 300S, which rides on 20-inch wheels. A 2016 Chrysler 300S Alloy Edition is pictured here.

Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima has distinctive styling, a V-6 paired to a CVT automatic that’s not terrible, and far more presence than the midsize Altima. Starting at $33,345, the Maxima doesn’t have the biggest interior in its segment, but is among the sportier entries.

Acura TLX

The Acura TLX is comfortable and includes as standard the seriously striking Jewel-Eye LED headlights. The TLX, with a smooth and efficient 2.4-liter I-4, starts at $32,635. When you want more than the 206-hp TLX 2.4 can offer, the base trim of the 290-hp TLX 3.5 also falls below $40,000.

The VW makes its best CLS-Class impression with a sloping roof, HID headlights, and premium looking leatherette seating surfaces for $32,435. Sure, it’s a compact, but with so much style we couldn’t overlook it.

Buick LaCrosse

The biggest sedan currently sold under the Buick name is the LaCrosse, which is classified as a midsize sedan but has a comfortable and quiet interior, as we’d expect of a Buick. You won’t be winning many street races with the LaCrosse, but that’s not the point of a car like this. For $31,990 before adding options, the Buick splits the difference first-tier luxury prices and trimmings that scream “Chevrolet.”
