Volkswagen is recalling the first batch of Golf models affected by the dieselgate scandal. Initial cars to be fixed are the Euro-market Volkswagen Golf TDI Blue Motion Technology with the 2.0-liter type EA 189 engine and manual transmission, the automaker announced. The first recall affects around 15,000 vehicles.
Customers have already received a letter informing them of the recall. A second letter will be sent advising owners to make an appointment with an authorized service center to perform the fix approved by the Federal Motor Transport Authority. Volkswagen says the “technical solution does not result in any changes to the fuel consumption levels, performance data, or noise emissions of the vehicles concerned.”
As with all recalls, the fix to reduce NOx emissions is free to customers. Volkswagen will also provide customers with rental cars during the time their cars are being fixed. The automaker reiterated that the cars have no safety issues and can be driven on public roads leading up to the fix.
In other Volkswagen news, the automaker may have to sell off some assets to pay for dieselgate, according to a report from Reuters. In the company’s annual risks and opportunities report, Volkswagen said, “The funding needed to cover the risks may lead to assets having to be sold due to the situation and equivalent proceeds for them not being achieved as a result.”
The automaker says that it faces “further significant financial liabilities” on top of the $18.4 billion it has set aside for the diesel gate scandal. In the report, the company suggests that demand may decrease and new and used vehicle sales margins may fall.
