Last year, Ford managed to sell around 140,000 Mustang models, and was the only sports coupe to sell over 100,000 units, according to data from IHS Automotive. Currently, the automaker sells the mustang in 140 markets.
Although 2015 was the first year that the Ford Mustang was offered globally, here in the U.S. it managed to outsell both the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. The Mustang has 12,563 sales, while the other two sports coupes combined sales only added up to 12,248 units.
“While much of the growth in Mustang demand in the United States has come from coastal markets – especially Southern California – and millennials opting for the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, buyers in other countries prefer the V-8,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst. “That unmistakable V-8 warble is a hot commodity outside the U.S.”
Since last summer, over 16,600 Ford Mustang orders have been placed in Europe, while the model is currently sold out through 2017 in Australia as it waits for an extra allotment of cars. In Germany, the convertible Mustang had the highest international take-rate, with one in three sales. Markets like China and the U.K. had limited availability, but still managed to help the Ford Mustang reach a total nameplate sale of 141,868 vehicles globally.
“U.S consumers have enjoyed interesting foreign sports cars for decades, so it was time for the Americans to return the favor with the worldwide launch of the new Mustang,” continued Merkle. “Global markets have responded in a huge way. Ford Mustang was the only sports coupe in the world with more than 100,000 units registered last year.”
