FCA Recalls Up to 811,586 Cars, SUVs For Roll-Away Risk

FCA is recalling an estimated 811,586 midsize SUVs and full-size cars because they could roll away if they aren’t placed in park properly. The automaker will be adding enhanced warnings and transmission shift strategy to prevent the cars from rolling away. An investigation by FCA and NHTSA found that some drivers have exited their cars without selecting park, which could cause a safety risk if the vehicle is still running.

The automaker is aware of 41 injuries that may be potentially related to the issue. FCA says the vehicles involved were inspected but were found to not have any evidence of equipment failure. All models affected by the recall come equipped with electronic shifters that return to the same position after switching it to a different gear. Gear selection is conveyed by indicator lights instead of gear lever position, which may cause drivers to accidentally leave their cars without putting it in park.

All cars involved also deliver warning sounds and alerts if the driver’s side doors are opened with the engine still on and the car isn’t put into “Park.” However, FCA and NHTSA’s investigation has concluded that these measures are not enough to keep drivers from remembering to select “Park” before exiting the car. Enhancements will combine warnings with a transmission shift strategy that will automatically prevent a car from moving under specific circumstances even if the driver doesn’t select “Park.”

Models affected by the recall included 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans, and 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. In Canada, an estimated 52,144 vehicles are affected by the recall while 16,805 units are affected in Mexico. Outside of the NAFTA region, 248,667 cars are affected.
