2017 Lincoln Continental Will Greet Passengers With Approach Detection

The 2017 Lincoln Continental will come with the brand’s Approach Detection technology, which, according to the automaker, will give drivers and passengers “a warm and inviting welcome.” Approach Detection was first launched on the MKC compact luxury crossover and it enables the car to sense whoever is carrying the key fob when he/she gets within 8 feet.

“The Lincoln Approach Detection does more than just turn on lights,” said Sheryl Connelly, Ford’s global consumer trends and futuring manager, in a release. “It allows Continental to welcome you as if arriving at a friend’s house for dinner, or checking into a resort. It makes you feel at home where you have everything you need and you are in a serene and familiar space.”

Once you approach the car, the 2017 Continental will project light mats beneath the front doors where the front occupants will step so they can avoid puddles or debris. When the car is equipped with power-folding side mirrors, they will deploy into position when the driver enters the car and closes the door. The car’s door handles will glow in a color that complements its exterior while the LED accent lights on the headlights and taillights also turn on. Interior ambient lights around the door panel, instrument panel, and cup holders will also turn on to brighten up the cabin.

In Select, Reserve, and Black Label models, the 2017 Continental will have sequential exterior lighting that will illuminate the whole vehicle. The sequential lighting also extends into the interior where the ambient lighting activates in a sequence and covers the cabin in soft light.

Sales of the 2017 Lincoln Continental will begin in fall 2016. The car will essentially only be sold in the U.S. and China.
