With the exception of truck owners, there’s perhaps no group of enthusiasts with a fiercer sense of loyalty than muscle car fans. Everyone has a favorite, whether it be the Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger. But it’s a bit more difficult to argue against the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 or Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, both of which have impressive amounts of power. We want to know, which one would you choose?
General Motors recently showed off the new 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 complete with unique bodywork and a beast of an engine. It uses a version of the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 from the Corvette Z06, but with Camaro-specific intake, two-mode exhaust, and computer tuning to push out 640 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes paired with a standard six-speed manual or fancy new 10-speed automatic. Compared to the old model, the new ZL1 drops 200 pounds, according to GM.
Unfortunately, it’s too early to test the Camaro ZL1 on the track and compare it directly against the competition. In terms of horsepower, the Hellcat wins hands down with a rating of 707 ponies and 650 lb-ft from its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. It’s also hard to deny the Hellcat’s comfortable ride and its Motor Trend 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds. But considering we clocked the outgoing ZL1 at a close 3.9 seconds, there’s a good chance the newer, lighter, more powerful ZL1 will outperform the Hellcat. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced for the ZL1, but we estimate it will start around $60,000. The 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat starts at $65,190.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference. Which do you prefer: the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 or the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat? Let us know in the comments below.
