Subaru Builds its 15 Millionth All-Wheel-Drive Vehicle

Today, Subaru of North America, Inc. announced that its parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., has produced its 15 millionth all-wheel-drive vehicle. In 2015 alone, AWD models accounted for 98 percent of Subaru’s global sales.

After 44 years of production, which started with the Subaru Leone Estate Van in 1972, Subaru’s AWD vehicles have seen advancements in technology and basic functions, with the automaker continuing to push for safer, more enjoyable driving.

Subaru says its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system offers stability and traction essential to any AWD system. Thanks to the symmetrically laid-out drivetrain, including a longitudinally-mounted Boxer engine, it features a balanced weight distribution. These configurations deliver better performance and stability at high speeds and tight corners, according to Subaru.

The AWD system is one of the major features underpinning the automaker’s “Confidence in Motion” campaign, along with safety and performance. Subaru plans to keep improving its engineering to give customers worldwide “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” whenever they get behind the wheel of a Subaru vehicle.

The automaker currently offers all-wheel-drive on the Outback, WRX, Legacy, and Forester as a standard feature.
