cars news 10: 2016 Mazda CX-9 EPA-Rated up to 22/28 MPG

Mazda has released EPA fuel economy estimates on the second-generation CX-9 three-row crossover. Originally unveiled at the 2015 Los Angeles auto show, the 2016 Mazda CX-9 now features the full suite of Skyactiv technologies, making it lighter than the car it replaces. The large crossover also now sports turbocharged power.

Under the hood of the 2016 CX-9 is a new 2.5-liter turbo-four that’s rated at 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (227 hp on regular gas) and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-drive versions of the new CX-9 are rated at 22/28 mpg city/highway, which is 5 mpg higher in the city and 4 mpg higher on the highway compared to the old V-6-powered CX-9. Opting for all-wheel drive drops those figures down to 21/27 mpg, which is an increase of 5 mpg across the board versus the outgoing all-wheel-drive CX-9.

Technologies such as cooled gas exhaust recirculation and a small Dynamic Pressure turbocharger are used to keep engine temperatures low without needing to add extra fuel and improve real-world fuel economy. Additionally, the 2016 CX-9 is lighter than the car it replaces by 198 pounds in front-drive guise and 287 pounds when equipped with all-wheel drive.

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 will go on sale in late spring 2016 and pricing will be announced closer to the car’s on-sale date.
