Turbo Reunion: 2016 BMW M2 Poses With 2002 Turbo, 1M

The BMW 2 Series has been celebrated by many as a spiritual successor to the 2002 of the 1970s. Now with the release of the hardcore 2016 M2, BMW is pushing that association even harder. At the car’s press launch at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, BMW rounded up 1973-1974 2002 and a 2011-2012 1 Series M Coupe for a photo shoot.

In the photos, it’s easy to see the lineage between the 1M and the M2. The two cars have similar front valance designs, and are very close in size. The 2002 is a small car, but next to the other two it doesn’t look tiny. The models all have in common a turbocharged powertrain. In the case of the 2002 Turbo, it’s a turbocharged, single-overhead-cam 2.0-liter I-4 producing about 170 hp. Though both the 1M and M2 are powered by a boosted 3.0-liter inline-six, their engines are of different designs. The 1M uses a version of the old twin-turbo N54 engine also found in the previous-generation 335i. The M2, on the other hand, uses an engine in the N55 family that uses a twin-scroll single turbocharger. The M2 makes 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque, but has a max of 369 lb-ft available through an overboost function. That’s 30 hp and up to 37 lb-ft more than the 1M’s 335 hp and 332 lb-ft.
