The Volvo V90 is the Automaker’s New Flagship Wagon

The new Volvo V90 has finally been revealed, and it could be the Goldilocks choice in the automaker’s 90 series lineup. For those seeking more cargo room than the 2017 S90 sedan, but who find the 2016 Volvo XC90 crossover a tad too big, could see the upcoming V90 wagon as the perfect fit.

Like the S90 and the XC90, the V90 is based on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). The wagon shares many of the XC90’s and S90’s styling cues, though its lower ride height and long profile arguably makes it the sportiest-looking model of the bunch. Volvo’s now signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights help give the V90 modern-looking mug, while its side profile is uncluttered with strong and simple lines. Volvo is no stranger to bold taillight designs and the new V90 is yet another example of that.

The interior is just as luxurious and gorgeous as the XC90 and S90, with items that include soft leather, rich wood accents, and the excellent Sensus touchscreen infotainment system. Other high-tech features include semi-autonomous technology and Apple CarPlay.

The automaker hasn’t officially confirmed that the V90 is headed stateside, though Volvo U.S. president Lex Kerssemakers appears to be fighting hard to bring the new wagon to our shores. In an interview with us at the 2016 Detroit auto show, Kerssemakers hinted that a V90 Cross Country would be a good possibility for the U.S. market.

While Euro-spec models will be offered with a diesel powertrain, the U.S. versions may only get gas and hybrid options like the twin-charged I-4 T6 model and T8 plug-in. More details on the new V90 wagon will likely surface at next month’s Geneva auto show. From there, it should arrive in showrooms by the end of the year, ready to take on other premium wagons like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
