To reflect its growing involvement with alternative fuel technologies, General Motors has renamed its powertrain unit to GM Global Propulsion Systems.
GM coined the division formerly known as GM Powertrain 24 years ago. Today, the group consists of more than 8,600 people who design and engineer all kinds of propulsion-related systems. Almost 50 percent of GM’s powertrain unit is involved with alternative or electrified propulsion systems, GM says.
The automaker notes it’s the first manufacturer to transition to this type of broad naming convention. “The diversity of our propulsion systems requires a name that reflects what we are already working on and delivering to our customers. I believe this will establish an industry trend,” said Dan Nicholson, vice president of GM Global Propulsion Systems, in a statement.
The name change is “another step on [GM’s] journey to redefine transportation and mobility,” GM Global Product Development chief Mark Reuss said in a release. Last month, GM also made another huge change to recognize advancing technologies. It recently set up a dedicated autonomous vehicle development team headed by Doug Parks.
GM is rapidly expanding its efforts related to propulsion technology. The automaker is investing heavily in electric vehicles, including the new Chevrolet Bolt, as well as fuel cells and advanced 9- and 10-speed transmissions. The automaker also recently spent $200 million on a new test wing at its powertrain engineering headquarters in Pontiac, Mich.
