Forget autonomous cars. Autonomous office chairs are the next frontier, according to Nissan.
The automaker says it has created the world’s first “Intelligent Parking Chair” in a new concept video. All you have to do is clap your hands, and the self-parking chair tucks neatly back into the desk it came from. But how does it work?
The base of the chair has a rolling device that can move it 360 degrees to a set destination. To get there, the chair receives help from four cameras placed on the ceiling in the room. These cameras “generate a bird’s-eye view to wirelessly transmit the chair’s position and its route to destination,” Nissan says.
“With this innovation in office technology, Japanese businessmen are now freed from the troublesome task of arranging chairs,” Nissan said in a recent press release. Thankfully, the company isn’t serious; the video is simply intended to plug Nissan’s park assist technology in a creative way. Some Nissan vehicles around the world offer automatic steering to help maneuver them into parking spaces.
Although Nissan isn’t bringing these chairs to market, they help demonstrate the future of autonomous mobility. Watch the video below to witness the autonomous office chairs in action.
