Honda Super Bowl Ad Uses Sheep, Classic Rock to Plug New Ridgeline

After skipping the Super Bowl last year, Honda will return to the biggest football game of the year in a new ad spotlighting the 2017 Ridgeline. The automaker enlisted a flock of real sheep, as well as a trained sheep dog, to lend a warm and cuddly feel to the burly truck.

The 2017 Honda Ridgeline debuted just last month at the Detroit auto show. Now, Honda is taking the opportunity to highlight one particular feature on the model: the “truck-bed audio system.” In the ad, the Ridgeline driver turns on the truck-bed audio system while unloading sheep from the vehicle. Apparently the sheep were listening, because when the man drives away, they sing their hearts out to Queen’s “Somebody to Love.”

This ad takes a more animated turn from Honda’s last Super Bowl commercial in 2014, which didn’t actually promote a specific vehicle. Instead, Bruce Willis and Fred Armisen pitched the safety of Honda’s products in a spot called “Hug Fest.”

The automaker has also revealed a new 2016 Super Bowl commercial for Acura ahead of the show. Like Honda’s ad, the Acura spot prominently features another song from the ’70s – “Runnin’ with the Devil” from Van Halen.
